Woo Goes International, Buys US-Based Dus To Help Indians Abroad Find Matches

Social match-making app Woo is making its first international foray, buying Dus, a Los Angeles-based dating app focused on match-making South Asians.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Dus will merge into Woo and the combined company will rebrand under Woo, said Sumesh Menon, Co-Founder of Woo. The combination will help Woo’s users not only connect with local community but also find matches in India, which continues to be an important preference for many singles, Menon noted.

Dus helps South Asian singles a dating platform to find other South Asians. Its founders include Indian-Canadian comedian and YouTube personality Jus Reign who will continue to promote and support Woo in the future, said Menon.

Woo, founded in 2014, has been growing rapidly in a crowded market for online match-making sites by providing singles an alternative to traditional matrimony sites where profiles are often created by parents and families, said Menon. Its target users between the ages of 25 and 32 are often on the platform to find “meaningful” matches and connect over common interests and tastes than just “two swipes,” he said, adding that its privacy features continue to be a preference for many of its women users.

Woo has seen over 4 million downloads and is eyeing further international expansion into the UK, Australia and US markets with sizable Indian diaspora, said Menon.

The company is backed by venture capital firms including Matrix Partners and Omidyar Network but used its own cash to fund the deal, said Menon.
